Tasting Notes

Gentle aromas of pine and Japanese pear appear first. The texture is pure and precise, guided by a cool mineral line.

Subtle notes of Japanese pear bring freshness, with a light effervescence that leaves a clean, lingering finish.

This sake pairs beautifully with light dishes such as white peach and mozzarella salad, Chinese steamed whole fish, and corn kakiage tempura.

about narai sankei

The sake rice, Sankei-Nishiki, is a descendant of Miyama-Nishiki and a relatively new variety registered in 2020. Named for the “blessings of the Shinshu mountains,” it is cultivated for us by Farm Ichimaru, rather than sourced through distributors, ensuring traceable, hands-on care from field to brew — a rarity among sake producers.
A gentle scent of pine and Japanese pear on the nose, followed by a refreshing purity that is carried by a subtle mineral freshness.

Our brewery is nestled in the beautiful townscape of Narai-juku, a historic and well-preserved town in Nagano Prefecture. narai uses the fresh mountain water of nearby Kiso Valley, flowing from an altitude of over 1,000m. The water is characterized by its clarity and smooth, rounded texture, brought about by a rare water hardness of less than 25.

We hope you enjoy narai, a sake that expresses the beautiful nature of Nagano.

for gift

With its distinctive bottle design, "narai" is a favored choice for gifting.

Despite being a traditional sake, it has been celebrated both in Japan and abroad—earning a Gold Medal at a top Asian award and receiving high acclaim for its bottle design at ProWine Tokyo, one of the world's largest wine and spirits exhibitions.

We also offer original gift boxes and bags. Gift a moment of quiet, elegant toasts for a truly memorable day.

Featuring a low alcohol content and a soft, delicate flavor, it naturally complements casual gatherings like weekend lunches or home parties. It is the perfect bottle to bring along and share with loved ones.

about narai

brewed in narai

water of the mountains,
sake of the skies

Our sake is brewed at an altitude of approximately 940 meters, in an environment blessed with nature and closer to the sky than almost any other in Japan.

While many sake breweries rely on stable well water, narai crafts its sake using natural mountain water flowing from elevations above 1,000 meters. Sourced near the watershed of the Shinano and Kiso rivers, this mountain water is exceptionally soft with a hardness level below 25 mg/L—one of the lowest in Japan. It is characterized by its crystal-clear purity and a round, smooth mouthfeel.

philosophy

beyond brewing

We are driven by a deeply held belief: to preserve and pass down the rich culture of sake to future generations. To achieve this, we look beyond conventional wisdom, embracing new challenges and exploring the endless possibilities of sake with creative freedom to share its true allure with the world.

In 2021, under the name "suginomori brewery," we revived a historic sake brewery in the post town of Narai-juku, Nagano Prefecture, breathing new life into its brewing traditions. By listening closely to local farmers and working hand-in-hand with them from the initial stages of rice cultivation, we strive to foster a sustainable, community-driven approach to sake making.

The brand name "narai" embodies our wish to share the timeless charm of Narai-juku with the world through our sake. Should your journeys ever bring you to Narai, we would be honored to welcome you.
